Key learning points

  1. Many adjectives come after the noun in French.
  2. Adjectives that come before the noun fit into five categories: BRAGS (Beauty, Rank, Age, Good/Bad and Size/quantity).
  3. Some -ir verbs in the present follow the pattern of venir. The stem is vien(n) in all but the nous and vous forms.
  4. [ien] is pronounced like 'bien'. [e] can be lengthened to sound like [ê/è] in the ils/elles forms of verbs like venir.
  5. Pour + infinitive can be used to give reasons.

Keywords

  • Adjective positioning - the placement of adjectives within a sentence before or after the noun

  • Venir - an example of a common group of -ir verbs, and meaning ‘to come’

  • Pour + infinitive - to, in order to; often used to give reasons

Common misconception

French adjectives always come after the noun they are describing.

There are five categories of adjectives which come before the noun: beauty, rank, age, good/bad, size/quantity. Practise using these before the noun alongside other adjectives which come after the noun.

It might be helpful to display in the classroom the prenominal adjective categories, using the acronym BRAGS, and the different groups of -ir verbs met: verbs like choisir, verbs like partir, and verbs like venir.
