Key learning points

  1. Nous and vous are the emphatic pronouns for us and you (plural/formal).
  2. Emphatic pronouns often follow prepositions, e.g. pour nous, avant vous.
  3. When a nasal vowel such as [an] is followed by a vowel, it is no longer a nasal sound but an oral vowel, e.g. ami.
  4. Extended listening and reading texts can be exploited to enrich our vocabulary and use of complex structures.

Keywords

  • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

  • Emphatic pronoun - used to emphasize a person, or when the pronoun stands alone, or after certain prepositions

Common misconception

'Nous' always means 'we' in French.

'Nous' means 'we' when used as a subject pronoun. 'Nous' means 'us' when used as an emphatic pronoun.
