Key learning points

  1. Some comparative adjective forms are irregular: 'bon' becomes 'meilleur' (better) and 'mauvais' becomes 'pire' (worse).
  2. Some superlative forms are irregular: le/la/les + meilleur(e) (s)= the best; le/la/les + pire(s)= the worst
  3. [oi] sounds like 'voir', [au] sounds like 'gauche', [u] sounds like 'tu'.

Keywords

  • Irregular - describes a word that does not follow a regular pattern

  • Comparative - a form of adjective or adverb used to compare people, things or ideas

  • Superlative - a form of adjective or adverb used to express the highest degree of a quality e.g. the tallest, the most interesting

Common misconception

In French the idea of 'best' and 'worst' is translated as 'plus bon' or 'plus mauvais'.

Just as in English, the French for 'best' and 'worst' are irregular adjectives and need to be learned carefully to avoid misunderstanding.

For Task B activities, as extension students might wish to practise framing the comparative sentence in a different way e.g. instead of 'more useful than' they could try 'less useful than' and swap around the lessons being compared.
