Key learning points

  1. Extended reading texts can be exploited to enrich our vocabulary and use of complex structures in familiar topics.
  2. It is important to plan the use of tenses and the inclusion of regular and irregular verbs when creating a longer text.
  3. Use of reference sources can help to create a personal response.
  4. One present tense in French translates the simple present and the present continuous; important when describing a photo.
  5. Careful planning, pre-rehearsal and immediate repetition help to improve performance in speaking tasks.

Keywords

  • Simple present - describes habitual events in the present: 'I do'

  • Present continuous - describes events happening right now: 'I am doing'

Common misconception

There are two present tenses in French.

There is only one present tense in French which translates both the simple present (I do) and the present continous (I am doing).
