Key learning points

  1. French cuisine is celebrated for its wide array of dishes and foods, many of which are famous around the world.
  2. 'y' and 'en' are often used in speech to replace a group of other words.
  3. Y means 'there' or '(to, about, in) it'. En means '(of) it/them'. When used together, 'y' comes before 'en'.
  4. In formal role-plays, it is important to be able to understand formal speech, including 'vous' verbs and 'votre'.

Keywords

  • Y - indirect object pronoun meaning ‘there’ and '(to, about, in) it'

  • En - indirect object pronoun meaning 'of it/them' used to replace 'de + noun'.

  • Role-play - a task with a situation and prompts to ask and answer questions, simulating a conversation

  • Vous - polite 'you'

Common misconception

It doesn't matter if you address a stranger in France as 'tu' or as 'vous'.

Using the correct register of address is very important for students. Practising role-plays in both formal and informal settings allows students to understand when to use the appropriate form of 'you'.
