Moving within the UK

I can explain why people move within the UK and understand how we can plot movement on a map.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Families move within the UK for many different reasons.
  2. People often move to improve their quality of life, which can be measured in a number of ways.
  3. People often move for economic reasons.
  4. We can use maps to share stories about where we have moved.

Common misconception

Some people have the view that they are local people and new arrivals are not welcome.

In reality, everyone in the UK is descended from new arrivals into the UK from outside. Few people are linked to a place for a long period.

Keywords

  • Belonging - Belonging is the feeling that you fit in in the group or place you are in.

  • Economic - Economic means things to do with the way money is made or spent.

  • Quality of life - Someone's quality of life is a measure of how happy, healthy and comfortable they are.

There are a range of tools that can be used to map stories - some of these require technology, but a paper and pen is also fine. The lesson will suggest some tools such as Digimap for Schools and ESRI's StoryMaps which you may find useful.
