Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Migration is when people move from one place to another; the UK has a long history of people arriving and leaving.
  2. There are many reasons why people decide to move to a new country, or away from their country of birth.
  3. Net migration is the difference between immigration and emigration into the UK.
  4. People from different backgrounds bring different cultural ideas and skills to their new home.

Common misconception

Migration tends to be for negative reasons.

Although the news may focus on migration due to conflict or other negative reasons, people also choose to move for positive reasons.

Keywords

  • Abroad - Abroad means going to or being in a foreign country.

  • Emigration - Emigration is leaving your country to live in another one.

  • Immigration - Immigration means moving into a new country to live there.

  • Migration - Migration means moving from one place to another with the intention of staying there.

A later unit will focus on personal stories of migration. It's important to remind students that any statistic on migration is made up of thousands of individual people deciding that the best option for themselves and their families is to move.
