- There are 15 National Parks in the UK and each one is a protected landscape because of its special qualities.
- National Parks are working landscapes as well as being environments of outstanding beauty and value.

Common misconception
Children may confuse National Parks with other protected sites.
Protected areas fall into two categories: internationally designated (Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage sites) and nationally designated (National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Scenic Areas). Identifying these may help.
