Key learning points

  1. German vowels (with or without umlauts) can be short or long. Vowels are short when followed by more than one consonant.
  2. Vowels are long when there is a double vowel, followed by 'h', or a single consonant.
  3. Change the vowel in the stem for the 2nd and 3rd person singular forms of strong verbs.

Keywords

  • Short vowel - vowels followed by more than one consonant

  • Long vowel - vowels followed by a single consonant, the letter 'h' or if there is a double vowel

  • Strong verb - a verb which changes its vowel in the verb stem of some of its forms

Common misconception

Umlauts do not make a difference to the pronunciation of a letter.

German vowels (with or without umlauts) can be short or long. Vowels are short when followed by more than one consonant. Vowels are long when there is a double vowel, followed by 'h', or a single consonant.
