Key learning points

  1. A simple German sentence contains a subject (for example I, you) and a verb with the correct ending.
  2. Extend a sentence by adding a noun after the verb, for example 'Ich spiele Fußball.'
  3. Adverbs normally come after the verb in German, splitting up the verb and noun.
  4. Sentences are turned into questions by swapping the verb and subject.

Keywords

  • Infinitive - the dictionary form of a verb giving its general meaning

  • Subject - who is doing an action, for example 'I' or 'you'

  • Word order - the order of words in a sentence

  • Adverb - word that describes a verb or adjective

Common misconception

Word order is the same in German and English.

German sentences containing adverbs have a different word order to English.

Ask students to use card to create their own jigsaw puzzle pieces for the word order tasks, to provide a hands-on activity they can complete alone or in pairs multiple times.
