Key learning points

  1. To talk about something something you would or might do, use 'würd-' to mean ‘would’ and an infinitive verb at the end.
  2. Use 'gern' and 'lieber' with 'würde' to talk about what we would like or would prefer to do.
  3. To say 'would have', use 'hätte'.
  4. To say 'would be', use 'wäre'.

Keywords

  • Würd- - form of 'werden' meaning 'would', used with a 2nd infinitive to express a conditional idea

  • Hätte - imperfect subjunctive form of 'haben' meaning ‘would have’

  • Wäre - imperfect subjunctive form of 'sein' meaning ‘would be’

  • Conditional - grammar structure expressing what you would do or what might happen in the future

Common misconception

Use 'würd-' whenever you want to say 'would'.

'Würd-' works for very many cases and is easy to remember because it sounds like the English 'would'. But 'haben' and 'sein' are important exceptions, especially in spoken German. 'Hätte' means 'I would have' and 'wäre' means 'I would be'.
