Keywords

  • Perfect tense - a past tense in German which uses a past participle with the verb ‘haben’ or ‘sein’

  • Imperfect tense - the simple, one-word past tense in German; for example ‘ich war’ (I was), ‘er hatte’ (he had)

Common misconception

The German vowel sounds [a], [o] and [u] are the same as in English.

German vowel sounds can be either long or short. Pronouncing them correctly ensure more authentic pronunciation, more accurate transcription and better understanding. Keep the simple rules in mind and practise reading aloud regularly.
