Key learning points

  1. The long German [e] can be written 'e', 'eh' or ‘ee’.
  2. 'Jed-' has different endings in the nominative, accusative and dative cases.
  3. Some verbs take indirect objects. They are also called ‘dative verbs’.
  4. [eu] can be written as 'eu' like in 'neu' and 'aü' like in 'Häuser'.

Common misconception

All verbs in German are followed by the accusative case, apart from 'sein' which takes the nominative case.

A number of verbs are followed by the dative case. These must be learnt and carefully identified when translating into German.
