Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. After their marriage, Elizabeth and Philip started a family with the birth of Charles in 1948, at Buckingham Palace.
  2. Princess Anne was born two years later at Clarence House in London.
  3. While Philip continued his career in the Royal Navy, Elizabeth remained in England caring for her young children.
  4. Between 1949-51 the young family moved to Malta when Philip was stationed there.
  5. Malta was a part of the British Empire, but is now part of the Commonwealth.

Common misconception

Pupils may think that Malta is close to the UK.

Explain to pupils how long it would take to travel there in the past (by boat) and today (by air).

Keywords

  • Buckingham Palace - Buckingham Palace was the official home of the king and queen in London

  • Career - a career is the job that a person wants to do throughout their life

  • Malta - Malta is a small island near Italy

  • Empire - an empire is a group of countries ruled by the rulers of another country

  • Commonwealth - the Commonwealth is a group of countries that used to be ruled by the rulers of another country

This part of Elizabeth's life takes place outside of the UK, and so pupils are starting to learn more about other geographies. Encourage pupils to talk about holidays they have been on or where their families are from to develop this further.
