- After their marriage, Elizabeth and Philip started a family with the birth of Charles in 1948, at Buckingham Palace.
- Princess Anne was born two years later at Clarence House in London.
- While Philip continued his career in the Royal Navy, Elizabeth remained in England caring for her young children.
- Between 1949-51 the young family moved to Malta when Philip was stationed there.
- Malta was a part of the British Empire, but is now part of the Commonwealth.
