Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Many Celtic people adopted Ancient Roman ways of life, but some resisted.
  2. Ancient Roman religions were adopted in Britain but often overlapped with older beliefs.
  3. Ancient Roman town building created major urban centres for the first time, connected by paved roads.
  4. Roman settlement meant that people and goods from many countries travelled to Britain e.g. the Ivory Bangle Lady.
  5. Many aspects of life changed for people in Britain, and resistance to Ancient Roman rule and culture varied.

Common misconception

Pupils may think that all aspects of religion, or all aspects of buildings changed.

Remind pupils that within an area of study that we define, there can be elements of both change and continuity.

Keywords

  • Romano-British - the culture that developed in Britain after the Ancient Roman conquest is called Romano-British culture

  • Ivory Bangle Lady - the Ivory Bangle Lady was an Ancient Roman with North African family whose skeleton was found in York

Use the lesson as an opportunity to activate the prior knowledge that pupils have built during this unit. Encourage them to add ideas and details to the images without prompt.
