  1. Vietnam had previously been part of a French colony known as French Indochina.
  2. The French fought against a Vietnamese nationalist group, the Viet Minh.
  3. The French were defeated by the Viet Minh and forced to withdraw from Vietnam.
  4. At the Geneva Conference in 1954, Vietnam was divided along the 17th parallel.
