Adding two to an even number gives the even number after.
Subtracting two from an even number gives the even number before.
When we count forwards in even numbers, we add two more each time.
When we count backwards in even numbers, we subtract two each time.

Common misconception

Children may incorrectly identify the even number 'before' or 'after' the one given.

Provide practice in the form of missing number problems where children must identify the even numbers before or after one given. Do this until fluent. Initially, allow children to use a number line. Remove this scaffold once feeling more confident.

The sequence of steps in this lesson are the same as those in that for adding and subtracting one, except now we are using children's knowledge of even numbers 'before' and 'after'. Find time to practise counting forwards and backwards in even numbers until children are fluent in this pattern.
