Key learning points
- If starting with and adding/subtracting the same amount, the number at the end of the story will be the same.
- When more are added, the number at the start increases.
- The more that are added, the greater the number at the end of the story will be.
- When some are subtracted, the number at the start decreases.
- The more that are subtracted, the smaller the amount at the end will be.
Keywords
Add - To find the total, or sum, by combining two or more parts (addends), or to increase an amount by adding another.
Increase - To make something greater/larger in size or quantity.
Subtract - To partition one part from another (the subtrahend from the difference), or to decrease an amount by taking an amount away.
Decrease - To make something smaller in size or quantity.
Common misconception
Some children may not relate the size of the number added/subtracted to the number at the end of the story.
Encourage children to predict how the number at the end of the story will change when the number added/subtracted is increased or decreased.
