Lesson details
Key learning points
- When the whole has been divided into two equal parts, each part is one-half of the whole.
- You can find half of objects, shapes and sets of objects.
Keywords
Half or one-half - One of two equal parts of a whole. To divide into two equal parts.
Common misconception
Some children may think that a line drawn through the middle of something means that the whole has been divided in half.
Children will benefit from practical experiences where they can explore finding half of shapes and objects in different ways. Encourage them to compare the size of the parts and make sure they are equal.
Look for opportunities within the learning environment and daily routines to explore half, such as when items are being shared into two groups or the clock is showing half past 12.
