Lesson details
Key learning points
- Dividing into equal groups can be recorded as a division expression.
- 8 divided into groups of 2 can be recorded as 8 ÷ 2
- The whole can be divided by the number of objects in each group.
Keywords
Division - Division means splitting into equal parts or groups.
Expression - An expression is a group of numbers and symbols without an equals sign.
Common misconception
Pupils may confuse the size of each group with the number of groups when reading and understanding an expression.
Focus on the whole and dividing this into groups of a certain size, modelling this with visual representations, without discussing the number of groups at this point.
Encourage pupils to use manipulatives (e.g. counters or Base 10 blocks) to act out the division stories. They do not need to find the number of groups but should begin to understand division as splitting into equal groups or parts. Some stories are written in reverse to secure understanding.
