Lesson details
Key learning points
- When one of the factors is 2, the other factor is half of the product.
- We can use our knowledge of doubling and halving to help us find a missing factor when the other factor is 2
Keywords
Half / Halving - One of two equal parts of a whole. To divide into two equal parts.
Double / Doubling - To become twice as many / to multiply by two.
Factor - A factor is a number which exactly divides another whole number.
Product - A product is the result of two or more numbers multiplied together.
Common misconception
Children may be unable to see how they can use learnt strategies to solve worded problems.
Support children to visualise and represent each problem, first using physical resources that can be manipulated, e.g. socks to make pairs, before looking to represent the mathematics. This will help them to see what they need to calculate.
