Lesson details
Key learning points
- A toy or person can be directed using the language of position and direction
- Turns to the right and left can be used to give directions
Keywords
Directions - A set of instructions to tell someone which way to go.
Common misconception
Children may describe movements around a grid using left, right, up and down rather than using the language of turn e.g. go forward, turn left.
Encourage children to act out their directions practically so they can feel themselves turning and see that they are making a turn and not taking sideways steps across the path or grid.

The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
