Key learning points

You can measure length in any direction.
When you measure height, you start from the bottom of the object and measure to the top to find how tall something is.
When you measure length, you start at one end and measure to the other end to find how long or how wide something is.
When you measure distance, you start and stop where the object started and stopped to find how far it has travelled.

Keywords

Length - How long from end to end.
Height - How tall from bottom to top.
Distance - A length. A measurement of how far something has travelled through space.

Common misconception

With larger amounts, children may miscount the number of objects.

Encourage children to mark where 10 objects end, and use this to count on from, rather than always re-starting at one.

As with previous lessons involving non-standard measures, practical experiences are very important for children to develop the ability to measure length accurately.
