Lesson details
Key learning points
- Estimate the answer first to improve your accuracy.
- Start with the numbers with the smallest place value so that regrouping can be represented.
- Use strategies to check, recognising when the answer should be odd or even.
Keywords
Estimate - Estimation means to find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.
Regroup - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.
Common misconception
Pupils may spend too long trying to make a very accurate estimate for their calculations.
Pupils need to understand that an estimation should be quick and easy to calculate. Encourage them to think about the nearest hundreds numbers so that these can be added together very quickly to give a value close enough to the answer.
Pupils will need to be familiar with regrouping ones and tens numbers when using column addition. For the second cycle in the lesson, the number cards 2-9 would be really useful as pupils can manipulate these to try and make the sums.
