Common misconception
Lots of practice has taken place for pupils to convert between kilometres and metres. Pupils may expect kilometres and miles to have a similar relationship and expect one mile to equal 1,000 metres.
Bar models and double number lines are excellent visual representations of the relationship and should help pupils to form a more concrete understanding of the equivalence between units. Displaying these will provide a prompt for pupils.
