Lesson details
Key learning points
- The horizontal distance from the origin is recorded first.
- Points on a coordinate grid are measured from the origin.
- Points have a horizontal and vertical distance from the origin.
- Points are marked where the lines of the grid cross.
Keywords
Origin - The origin is where the x-axis and y-axis cross.
Coordinate - Coordinates are a set of values that show an exact position.
Common misconception
Pupils might not start counting from the origin (0,0) but from another point on the grid, leading to incorrect placement of the point.
Emphasise the importance of always starting from the origin when plotting or describing coordinates. Have students physically point to or touch the origin before plotting any point.
Reinforce the concept that horizontal movement is left to right (x-axis) and vertical movement is up and down (y-axis). Use physical gestures or labels on the grid to differentiate between the two directions.
