Common misconception
Pupils attempt to learn how many tens, hundreds and thousands there are in 100,000 as a set rule rather than develop a sense for this.
Building and breaking 100,000 in different ways can be a really effective way to develop a sense of the number. You could use base 10 blocks to build up to 100,000 where a one cube could be redefined as 100 and then use plasticine to create 10 and 1.
Take time to discuss how pupils reason their thinking in Task B about what is greater than or less than 100,000, emphasising how working out the value of a smaller amount can then be scaled up. For example, how many breaths are taken in one minute, one hour then one day?
