Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Powers of 10 and their multiples can be subtracted using the language of unitising.
  2. Known facts can be used alongside unitising to subtract powers of 10 and their multiples.
  3. Subtraction of powers of 10 and their multiples can be represented on a number line.

Keywords

  • Million - One million is composed of one thousand thousands. 1,000 × 1,000 = 1,000,000 We write one million as a one followed by six zeros.

  • Unitise - When we unitise, we treat groups that contain, or represent, the same numbers of things as ‘units’ or ‘ones’.

  • Power of 10 - A power of 10 is when 10 is multiplied by itself a certain number of times.

Common misconception

Children may struggle with the language of unitising.

Encourage children to read aloud and spot what they notice - which known fact can they see - what is the same/different?

Children need to be secure with known number facts to 20 to ensure they can unitise successfully minimising overload. Children need to be aware of the structure: if one part remains the same but the whole increases by an amount then the difference will increase by the same amount.
