Construct quadrilaterals with and without parallel and perpendicular sides
I can use equipment to construct and compare quadrilaterals with and without parallel and perpendicular sides.
Lesson details
Key learning points
- Construction strips allow you to create different polygons.
- Lines are perpendicular when they are at right angles to each other.
- Lines are parallel because they are always the same distance apart.
Common misconception
Pupils may find it challenging to identify specific quadrilaterals e.g. trapeziums when making them out of construction sticks as it can be harder to see the properties.
Using a ruler to draw the shape, using the inside of the construction sticks, can support pupils in seeing and identifying the key properties to help them classify a quadrilateral.
Keywords
Polygon - A polygon is a 2D shape made up of three or more straight lines.
Perpendicular - Two lines which meet at a right angle are perpendicular.
Parallel - Parallel lines are straight lines that are always the same distance apart. They never get closer together or further apart.
