Common misconception
When finding missing numbers in column addition, pupils may find it difficult to identify whether they can add or subtract.
Remind pupils that addends are parts and the sum is the whole. To find a missing part, we subtract the known part from the whole. To find a missing whole, we add the known parts together. Bar models or part-part-whole models can model this.
