Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Where four right angles meet, there is a full turn and no gaps between the shapes.
  2. Joining four right angles at a point will always make a full turn.
  3. A right angle is marked with a small square corner inside the angle.

Keywords

  • At a point - A point is an exact location. It has no size, only position.

Common misconception

Pupils may not correctly identify right angles within a shape to join them.

Make sure that pupils have opportunities to identify right angles within a range of shapes prior to the lesson. If possible, encourage them to mark the right angles to help them. They should only be joining these right angles around a point.

If possible, give the pupils opportunities to investigate a range of shapes using manipulatives that they can turn over and draw around (coloured plastic shapes work very well for this). Ensure that pupils have a range of shapes, with and without right angles.
