Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Sometimes numbers are rounded as approximations or to give an estimate or average.
  2. To round to the nearest multiple of 1,000,000 identify the previous and next multiples of one million and the midpoint.
  3. When we round to the nearest multiple of one million, the critical digit is the 100,000s digit.
  4. If the critical digit is a 4 or less, we round to the previous multiple of one million.
  5. If the critical digit is a 5 or more, we round to the next multiple of one million.

Keywords

  • Round - When we round, we make a number simpler but keep its value close to what it was. The result is less accurate, but easier to use.

  • Midpoint - The midpoint is the middle of something, in this case the middle of two points on a number line. It is the point halfway between two things, or numbers.

  • Multiple - A multiple is result of multiplying a number by an integer.

  • Critical - Something that is critical has crucial importance.

Common misconception

Children may not understand the concept of 'nearest multiple of 1,000,000'

The nearest multiple of 1,000,000 is the multiple of 1,000,000 that a given letter or number is closest to. If a number is before than the midpoint, this will be the previous multiple and if it is after, this will be the next multiple.

Check that children are secure with their place value and identifying multiples of 1,000,000 and finding the midpoints of these multiples. Encourage the use of number lines until children are secure. Take care pronouncing 'round' so children do not confuse it with 'around'.
