Key learning points
- Unitising can be used to support the composition of 7- or 8- digit numbers.
- If 250 is one quarter of one thousand, then 250,000 is one quarter of 1,000 thousands (1 million)
- If 200 is one fifth of 1,000 then 200,000 is one fifth of 1,000,000
- If 2,500 is one quarter of ten thousand, then 2,500,000 is one quarter of 10 thousand thousands (10 million)
- If 2,000 is one fifth of 10,000 then 2,000,000 is one fifth of 10 thousand thousands (10,000,000)
Keywords
Composition - The composition of a whole is the way in which it is made. For example, in the context of this lesson, we will look at equal parts of the whole.
Common misconception
Children may struggle to use unitising to make connections between the composition of 1,000 or 10,000 and one million or ten million.
Use the suggested stem sentences e.g. '250 is one quarter of 1,000, so one-quarter of 1,000 thousands must be 250 thousand' to support developing the unitising concept.
