Scale known multiplication facts by 100

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can scale known multiplication facts by 100

      Key learning points

      1. If one factor is made one hundred times the size, the product will be one hundred times the size.
      2. One factor has been multiplied by 100 so the product is multiplied by 100
      3. When multiplying two numbers, if either factor is made 100 times the size, the product will be 100 times the size.
      4. 6 multiplied by 300 is equal to 600 multiplied by 3 or 6 hundreds multiplied by 3

      Keywords

      • Scaling - Scaling is when a given quantity is made ___ times the size.

      • Factor - A factor is a number which exactly divides another whole number.

      • Product - A product is the result of two or more numbers multiplied together.

      Common misconception

Times tables recall is crucial in these lessons. It provides the platform for children to extend their understanding in combination with what they know about place value.

For children who struggle with times table recall, give them a times table grid to refer to. This lesson is teaching the concept of scaling, not testing their knowledge of times tables.

      Teacher tip

Some of your pupils may want to know what happens when both factors are scaled up. Don't dismiss this if it comes up but be reminded that this may overcomplicate calculations for the whole class. Explain that this is something for future learning but excellent conjecture and pattern spotting.
