Common misconception

Students often omit any place holders when subtracting decimals.

Encourage all place holders to be used in all written calculations so they are not omitted when they need to be there.

Keywords

  • Integer - An integer is any positive or negative whole number or zero. E.g. (−2), 0, 153 are all examples of integers.

  • Decimal form - A number is in decimal form when the decimal point is shown and there are digits to the right of the decimal point.

  • Digit - A digit is one of the symbols of a number system. In our number system we use the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

In the second learning cycle when talking about times. You could introduce a short task (e.g. complete a particular time table) that students time themselves doing. They can then in pairs find the total and difference between their times.
