      Checking understanding of plotting coordinates

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can plot coordinates in the first quadrant.

      Key learning points

      1. Coordinates can be plotted in the first quadrant.
      2. Shapes can be described using coordinates.
      3. Moving all the points of a shape using the same rule will translate the shape.

      Keywords

      • Quadrant - A quadrant is any one of the four areas into which a space is divided by the $$x$$ and $$y$$ axes.

      • Origin - The origin is where the $$x$$-axis and $$y$$-axis cross. It has the coordinate pair (0,0).

      • Plot - Drawing on a graph or map is known as plotting.

      • Translate - Translation is a transformation in which every point of a shape moves the same distance in the same direction.

      Common misconception

Confusion between which is which out of (1,4) and (4,1). Is it up and along? Along and up?

Clarity of language helps. Coordinates are written x, then y coordinate. Move first in the x-direction. There are no 'corridors and stairs'.

      Teacher tip

Slide 28 compares (2,5) and (5,2). At this moment ask students to speak. Draw out the rich, accurate language that has gone before in the lesson to explain how we consider and communicate coordinates accurately.

Which word best describes this: $$(4,1)$$

      Correct answer: A coordinate
      The number 4.1
      A ratio
      A fraction

      Q2.
Which of these best describes the purpose of a coordinate?

It coordinates the order in which we do our operations.
      It adds numbers together.
Correct answer: It uses numbers to uniquely determine the position of a point in space.

      Q3.
One of our axes is missing a label. What should it be labelled?

      The horizontal axis
      The vertical axis
      Correct answer: $$x$$
      $$y$$

      Q4.
      What is this coordinate?

      $$5.2$$
      $$2.5$$

      Q6.
Which of these are properties of a square?

      has exactly three sides
      Correct answer: is a quadrilateral
Correct answer: has 4 equal length sides
Correct answer: all interior angles are 90 degrees
      opposite sides are not parallel

      6 Questions

      Q1.
The coordinate $$(0,0)$$, where the $$x$$ and $$y$$ axes cross, is called the .

      An image in a quiz
      Correct Answer: origin, Origin

      Q2.
Which language best describes this coordinate position?

      4 along, 2 up.
      4 right, 2 up.
4 in the $$x$$ direction, 2 in the $$y$$ direction.
4 in the positive $$x$$ direction, 2 in the positive $$y$$ direction.
Correct answer: From the origin, 4 in the positive $$x$$ and 2 in the positive $$y$$ direction.

      Q3.
What are the coordinates of points A and B?

      Correct Answer:C,$$(0,0)$$

      $$(0,0)$$

      Correct Answer:D,$$(3,0)$$

      $$(3,0)$$

      Q5.
If you take the coordinate $$(2,1)$$, add $$5$$ to the $$x$$-coordinate and leave the $$y$$-coordinate unchanged, which of these best describes the change in position of the point?

It will reflect in the $$x$$-axis.
A translation by 5 in the negative $$y$$-direction.
A translation by 5 in the negative $$x$$-direction.
Correct answer: A translation by 5 in the positive $$x$$-direction.
