Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Promotions do not always offer the best value for money.
  2. Advertisements often use data to make their point.
  3. The validity of the data and conclusions should not be assumed.

Keywords

  • Proportion - Proportion is a part to whole (sometimes part to part) comparison.

  • Unit - A unit is one of something that defines the 'one' you are counting in.

Common misconception

Pupils may think that it is always best to buy a 'deal' as deals are always a good thing.

Throughout the lesson it is demonstrated that a deal or promotion may not always be right for every customer. Is a deal worth it if you don't need to buy that much?

You may wish to ask your pupils to investigate prices/promotions at different shops which sell the same products. If each pupils picks a different item, the class can then compare which shop is saving the customer more money across all items.
