Key learning points

  1. Move: the correct technique for hopping and skipping requires bending our knees and swinging our arms.
  2. Think: curiosity enables us to try hops and skips in different activities.
  3. Feel: self belief will enable hopping and skipping techniques to be explored.
  4. Connect: listening to the instructions and showing empathy enables fair play in the games.

Keywords

  • Hopping - to continuously jump on one foot at the same time

  • Skipping - a combination of a long step and a hop, stepping from one foot to the other with a hop or bounce

  • Technique - the method we use to perform a task

Common misconception

Pupils are confusing the techniques for hopping and skipping and sometimes run instead.

Remind pupils that running is a rule break. Celebrate pupils who are hopping not running and demonstrate both techniques.

Split the class into smaller groups to access the activities, then you can move groups on when they are ready. Celebrate pupils who try hard, even if they are finding the technique challenging and build points for this into your games.
