Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Key principles of training in sport include specificity, progressive overload, reversibility, and tedium.
  2. Principles of traning are used to optimise training and fitness and to prevent injury.

Keywords

  • Specificity - making training specific to the sport being played/movements/muscles/energy used

  • Progressive overload - gradual increase so that fitness gains occur, but without potential injury. Overload is the gradual increase of stress placed upon the body

  • Reversibility - losing fitness levels when you stop exercising

  • Tedium - boredom that can occur from training the same way every time. Variety is needed

Common misconception

Overload is negative and should not be encouraged during training.

Overload is encouarged as a positive aspect of traning as progression is being managed correctly to bring about adaptations to fitness. It is not to be confused with 'overuse' which can cause injuries.
