Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Heaven (Jannah) is also known as paradise.
  2. Hell (Jahannam) is described in the Qur'an as an abyss, a place of fire.
  3. On the Day of Judgement, humans will be judged by Allah and sent to either Heaven or Hell for the afterlife.
  4. There are different interpretations of what Heaven and Hell are like in Islam.

Keywords

  • Akhirah - beliefs about life after death in Islam

  • Heaven - paradise, Allah’s reward for the faithful and repentant

  • Hell - place of suffering for sinners and those who reject the Qur’an

  • Jahannam - an Arabic term used for ‘hell’

  • Jannah - an Arabic term used for ‘heaven’

Common misconception

That Muslims believe hell (Jahannam) is a place where all sinners will remain in eternal pain and punishment.

The majority of Muslims believe that those who die without faith in God (Allah) will be punished eternally but sinners who fell short of good deeds will eventually enter paradise unless they committed the gravest of sins like shirk.
