You can find out and describe what happens when plants do not have warmth.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Plants are living things, they need warmth to grow, stay alive and keep healthy.
  2. A plant without warmth may not grow fully and could eventually die.
  3. Changes in plant growth can be compared and described using observation skills.
  4. Different plants grow in different temperatures around the world.
  5. Unhealthy plants without warmth can sometimes be recovered within a short period of time.

Common misconception

Pupils may think the warmer the plant, the better it grows and the healthier it is.

Show that different plants need different amounts of warmth, and to expose a plant to high or low temperatures could cause it damage

Keywords

  • Plant - A plant is a living thing that often has roots, stem and leaves.

  • Warmth - The Sun gives us warmth, so that we can live at just the right temperature

  • Temperature - Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is.

  • Suitable - Something that is suitable is just right.

  • Compare - When we compare, we look at what is the same and what is different about at least two things.

Pupils will be observing the plants growing without warmth since lesson 3. They will compare these to the plants growing with everything (water, warmth and light). They will add today's observations without warmth to their chosen method from lesson 4
