Changes in humans before and after birth

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe changes in humans as they develop as babies.

      Key learning points

      1. Humans are mammals, they grow and develop inside the mother's womb for nine months until they are born.
      2. When human babies are born they cannot survive by themselves.
      3. Humans are considered as babies up to 12 months of age, as they learn to focus their vision, reach out and explore.
      4. Up until they are six months old, babies don't eat normal food, they only drink milk.
      5. The stages of human development as a baby can be recorded in a variety of ways.

      Keywords

      • Human - People are a type of animal called humans.

      • Mammal - A mammal is a warm-blooded animal that gives birth to live young and has hair or fur.

      • Womb - The womb is an organ in female mammals where offspring grow and develop.

      • Develop - To develop is to grow or change gradually.

      • Baby - A human that is less than a year old is called a baby.

      Common misconception

Pupils may think that the baby grows inside its mother's stomach.

Using the resources, explain that babies develop in an organ called a womb.

      Teacher tip

Encourage children to bring in photos of themselves as babies, or collect them from familiar staff members, so pupils can see how people they know looked different when they were younger.
