Lesson details
Key learning points
- Scientists gather and record data in a variety of ways to help in answering questions.
- Findings can be recorded using labelled diagrams.
- Scientists use what they already know and the evidence they have gathered to make predictions.
Keywords
Question - A question is a type of sentence that asks something.
Data - Data is information collected during an investigation. It may be numbers, symbols, pictures or text.
Diagram - A diagram is a drawing used to explain something clearly.
Label - A label is a sign that gives us information about the thing it is with.
Prediction - A prediction is a statement saying what you think will happen.
Common misconception
Pupils may think that plants are able to grow in any conditions and will simply adapt to their surroundings.
Explain that plants have certain requirements to survive and grow well, and will be unhealthy and likely die without these requirements. Results from pupils' enquiries will back this up and help them to see this first-hand.
Equipment
Pupils will need access to the plants they have been growing as part of earlier science lessons. There is data in the slide deck that can be used as an alternative if this is not possible.
