      Learning outcome

I can describe the symptoms of asthma, and some of the risk factors that can increase the chance of having asthma.

      Key learning points

      1. Asthma is a common non-infectious disease that can cause breathing difficulties.
      2. During an asthma attack, the breathing (bronchial) tubes narrow.
      3. Symptoms include wheezing and shortness of breath.
      4. Symptoms of asthma can be treated using medication taken using an inhaler.
      5. Risk factors for asthma include air pollution, smoking, low birth weight, having an allergy, and family history.

      Keywords

      • Asthma - A non-infectious disease that affects the gas exchange system.

      • Bronchi - Tubes that branch from the trachea into each lung.

      • Asthma attack - When the symptoms of asthma get temporarily worse.

      • Risk factor - Something that increases the chance of ill health.

      Common misconception

Asthma is a childhood disease that people will grow out of.

Although symptoms can improve as children get into adolescence, they will always have asthma and it may worsen as they get into old age.

      Teacher tip

Ask pupils to to think about what would happen if you squeezed a hose pipe when water is travelling through it. This is similar to what happens in a person's airways when they have an asthma attack.
