Key learning points
- The suffix '-tion' at the end of an English word is often '-ción' in Spanish; all '-ción' words are feminine.
- '-ción' words lose the accent in the plural form; this is because the stress now falls on the penultimate syllable.
- The verb 'dar' means 'to give, giving'; its plural 'we' form is 'damos'.
- The verb 'querer' means 'to want, wanting'; its plural 'we' form is 'queremos'.
Keywords
Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning or how it is used, e.g. 'educate' → 'education'
Irregular verb - a verb that does not follow the regular rules
Dar - -ar irregular verb meaning 'to give, giving'
Querer - -er irregular verb meaning 'to want, wanting'
Common misconception
All the words ending in '-ción' and '-ciones' must have an accent.
If a word ends in 'n' or 's' and has final syllable stress, it must have an accent, e.g. 'la opción'. However, if a word ending in 'n' or 's' has penultimate syllable stress, it does not need an accent, e.g. 'las opciones'.
