Key learning points

  1. The definite article in Spanish is 'el' and los' with masculine nouns and 'la' and 'las' with feminine nouns.
  2. When using 'es', we need to use the singular form of the adjective.
  3. When using 'son', we need to use the plural form of the adjective.

Keywords

  • Definite articles - the words 'el', 'la', 'los' and 'las', meaning 'the'

  • Indefinite articles - the words 'un', 'una', 'unos', 'unas', meaning 'a/an' and 'some'

  • Adjective agreement - when the ending of an adjective matches the noun it describes in gender and number

Common misconception

In Spanish, adjectives always end in -o.

In Spanish, adjectives must agree with the noun they describe in gender and number. If the noun is feminine, the adjective will end in -a, but if it is masculine, it will end in -o. If the adjective already ends in -e, it will stay the same.

The teacher might want to ask students to read their writing aloud and make the last written activity a spoken and listening one as well. That way, students will practice their Spanish speaking and listening skills too.
