Key learning points
- The sound-symbol correspondence (SSC) [ge] is pronounced as in 'gente', [gi] as in 'imaginar'.
- Some Spanish infinitives end in -er and -ir.
- The verb ending changes depending on who the verb refers to.
- To mean 'I' with an -er/-ir verb, the ending is -o; this is called the first person singular.
Keywords
First person singular - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to yourself (I)
-er verb - a verb whose infinitive form ends in -er
-ir verb - a verb whose infinitive form ends in -ir
Common misconception
The verb ending -o means 'I' but only if you're a boy or man.
For regular verbs, the 'I' verb form always ends in 'o'. Verb endings match the person, but don't change for gender, so 'hablo' means 'I speak' for everyone. It is adjectives that change ending -o to -a to describe a girl or woman.
