Key learning points

  1. Some Spanish infinitives end in -er and -ir; we call them -er and -ir verbs.
  2. The verb ending changes depending on who the verb refers to; the second person singular 'you' ending is -es;
  3. When writing from memory, it is important to practise language thoroughly first, especially verbs.
  4. Second person singular verbs are useful for asking questions, when writing to someone else.

Keywords

  • -er verbs - a verb whose infinitive form ends in -er

  • -ir verbs - a verb whose infinitive form ends in -ir

  • Second person singular - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to another person (you)

Common misconception

It is easy to write Spanish from memory if I know what the words mean.

Knowing what words mean when you listen to or read them doesn't mean you can write them from memory. To write from memory, you need to practise writing from memory, especially verbs, as these need to be right to communicate your message clearly.

Teachers may find it useful to include short starter activities most lessons, e.g. using mini whiteboards, to revisit verb meanings and forms, as without plentiful practice, many pupils find these harder to retain over time than nouns or adjectives.
