Key learning points
- ‘Hay’ or ‘tiene’ with an indefinite article introduces a noun.
- A definite article often refers back to a previously introduced noun.
- To express what someone wants, use ‘querer’, and to give something, use ‘dar’.
Keywords
Hay - verb meaning ‘there is’ or ‘there are’
Dar - verb meaning ‘to give’
Querer - verb meaning ‘to want’
Common misconception
All nouns in Spanish are always used with an article, a word for a, some or the.
Some nouns are uncountable and have no plural. Use these without an article, as in English. For example, 'quiere dinero' means 'she, he wants money'.
Students can be shown a video or the teacher could model the adapting of the poem for small group performances, so that each student says one line or one word, and there is some choral repetition or use of different moods.
