Key learning points

  1. The demonstrative pronouns 'esto' and 'eso' mean 'this' and 'that'.
  2. Unlike 'este', 'esta', 'ese' and 'esa', 'esto' and 'eso' cannot appear before a noun.
  3. 'Eramos' means 'we were', 'erais' means 'you all were' and 'eran' means 'they were'.
  4. 'Cue' is pronounced as in 'cuerpo', 'cua' as in 'cuatro' and 'cui' as in 'cuidar'.

Keywords

  • Demonstrative pronoun - a type of pronoun; in English this includes the words 'this', 'that', 'these' and 'those'

  • Esto - Spanish pronoun meaning 'this' for something unspecific or a general idea

  • Eso - Spanish pronoun meaning 'that' for something unspecific or a general idea

Common misconception

'Eso' and 'esto' can appear before a noun.

'Eso' and 'esto' cannot appear before a noun because they are pronouns. Instead it is necessary to use 'este' and 'esta' (to mean 'this') and 'ese' and 'esa' (to mean 'that').
